Playing Fighting Irish Comes With Catch
One of the top college football teams in the country -- the Notre Dame Fighting Irish -- is looking to make a 10-year deal to play UConn. The deal comes with a catch, however.
The school said that it will play UConn, but not at Rentchler Field.
One of the state's lawmakers is proposing a bill that would ensure that all of UConn's home games would be played at Rentchler.
He said that no one can argue against the loyalty of Uconn Husky fans, and that the fans deserve to watch thief favorite team at home.
Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Hena Daniels reported that the UConn athletic department is considering outsourcing their games against the leprechaun army elsewhere.
State Rep. Michael Christ said he plans on introducing a bill that would require all UConn home football games to be played at Rentschler.
He said that taxpayers have spent almost $100 million to build the East Hartford stadium and under the Notre Dame deal, it would see less play.
While Notre Dame has played in several giant stadiums, the team has also tackled opponents in smaller venues. This year, the Fighting Irish are scheduled to go up against North Carolina, whose stadium seats 60,000 fans, and Boston College, whose seating capacity is similar to Frentchler Field.
UConn argued that if it doesn't play Notre Dame in either Boston or New York, other schools will gladly take the Huskies spot. They said that playing the team guarantees that games will be televised.
